CI/CD is a big buzzphrase and in DevOps it's a great first-order measure of how well you're doing.  Velocity of change is a key measure, but it's not the only one, or even the most important one.  There are a ton of tools and pipeline approaches (and we use the word 'pipeline' here to include everything from requirements definition to active deployments) so picking something that works best for your product and team isn't just a technology decision, but a methodology and practice that will live with you for a long time.

Methology and Process

Our 6-Phased Approach

Project Scope Phase

  • Develop and agree on desired outcomes with an outline of objectives, change points, success criteria, and metrics to evaluate progress and determine completion. 

Discovery Phase

  • Current and future state assessment, which will detail the points identified in the Project Scope Phase         ◦ 
  • Sections scope (these and more depending on specific needs): technology, organization, culture, people, core competencies, and of course, presently identified gaps
  • Successes so far, challenges identified, obstacles, alternatives considered to date

Critical Analysis Phase (the 2nd set of eyes review)

  • Including 1:1 interviews, with a 360 degree assessment approach
  • Development and preview of recommendations

Recommendation Phase – Delivery of a recommendation report consisting of: 

  1. Executive summary
  2. Detailed review

  • Concrete steps across product technology, development technology and methodology, organization structure, core vs. context recommendations, staffing, etc. 
  • Timelines

Implementation Phase

  • With or without step-by-step assistance and regular review points

Follow-up Phase(s)

  • To ensure the desired outcomes are achieved, or in progress, and adapt/augment as needed
